Report: Marlins made 5-year offer to Jansen exceeding $80M

The Miami Marlins are staying diligent in their pursuit of a closer, and after missing out on Aroldis Chapman, they've turned their attention to the last elite reliever remaining.

Following news of Chapman reportedly agreeing to a record five-year, $86-million deal with the New York Yankees, the Marlins have reportedly made a similarly enormous offer to Kenley Jansen of five years that could exceed $80 million, sources said, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

Any deal with the Marlins would reunite Jansen with manager Don Mattingly; the pair were together for five seasons when Mattingly piloted the Los Angeles Dodgers. Passan notes, however, that there is concern regarding the pursuit of Jansen as any deal with the closer would result in the Marlins forfeiting the 13th overall pick.

Chapman did not come with similar draft-pick compensation because he was traded midseason from the Yankees to the Chicago Cubs, and therefore was not part of the qualifying offer process.

The Marlins interest in Jansen has been rampant for some time. Owner Jeffrey Loria recently signed off on the team spending big on a closer in order to revamp the bullpen. The team has also expressed an interest in trading current closer A.J. Ramos to make room for Jansen.

For his part, Joel Sherman of the New York Post summed up the current Jansen sweepstakes simply, indicating it will come down to either the Dodgers - where he's played every season of his big-league career - or the Marlins.
