Winners and losers from Day 3 of winter meetings

The third day of baseball's winter meetings wasn't short on action. A surprise free-agent signing, another blockbuster trade, and the continuation of one franchise's stunning reboot highlighted the proceedings in Maryland. Here's a look at the winners and losers from Day 3 of the meetings.

Winners

Chicago White Sox

One day after pulling in an excellent haul for Chris Sale, White Sox general manager Rick Hahn did it again, sending outfielder Adam Eaton to Washington for three pitching prospects - one of whom is Lucas Giolito, arguably the best pitching prospect in the game. It's an incredible turn of events for a franchise that had been in no-man's land this past season, but has now amassed a multitude of top prospects that could turn its fortunes around sooner than anticipated. It's a clear win for the South Siders, whose future suddenly looks bright.

Kenley Jansen

Somewhere, Jansen and his agent saw news of Aroldis Chapman's reported record-breaking deal with the Yankees late Wednesday night. In the moments afterward, they likely popped a bottle of champagne, because Jansen is soon going to be a very rich man. On the heels of missing out on Chapman, the Marlins reportedly offered Jansen a five-year deal that could exceed $80 million, while the Dodgers - his former team - are also in the mix. The possibility of a mystery team is always in play, too. However it works out, Chapman's signing made Jansen a big winner as Wednesday night turned to Thursday morning.

Free-agent sluggers

One free-agent slugger cashed in in a big way Wednesday. Ian Desmond opted for greener pastures, signing a four-year, $70-million deal with the Colorado Rockies - the second most expensive contract handed out so far this offseason (Yoenis Cespedes' $110-million deal is tops). Desmond's big deal could reshape the market for other free agents looking for big money, including Edwin Encarnacion, Mark Trumbo, Jose Bautista, and Dexter Fowler.

Losers

Washington Nationals

When a team is desperate to make a move, it can do some crazy things. That's exactly what happened with the Washington Nationals. After missing out on Chris Sale and reportedly backing out of a deal for Andrew McCutchen, general manager Mike Rizzo decided to pull the trigger on a trade that would send three of the team's top 10 prospects - Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, and Dane Dunning - to the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Adam Eaton. To make matters more dire for the team, it still needs a closer, and Mark Melancon, Wade Davis, and Aroldis Chapman have all found new homes. At least Bryce Harper is happy? Judging by his cryptic tweet after the Eaton deal, maybe not.

Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates entered the week expecting they'd trade McCutchen, the face of the franchise, and begin their latest rebuild. They came close, reportedly believing a deal to send McCutchen to Washington for a package including two of the players eventually traded to the White Sox was nearing completion - but it fell through. Now, the 2013 NL MVP is still a Pirate, GM Neal Huntington didn't come away with his coveted prospects, and the team may have some smoothing over to do with its superstar. McCutchen's scheduled to appear at the Pirates' Fan Fest this weekend; suffice to say, it could make for an interesting few days in the Steel City.
