Watch: Samardzija pinch runs for pinch hitter Bumgarner
Pitchers do more than pitch in San Francisco.
With Matt Cain tossing a no-hitter through five innings against the Washington Nationals on Sunday, San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy pinch hit for the 31-year-old with another pitcher, Madison Bumgarner.
Bumgarner, who's anything but an easy out at the plate, blasted a 1-1 pitch to deep right-center field for a double, proving Bochy's decision was a wise one.
But Bochy wasn't done utilizing the other abilities of his pitchers just yet. He substituted pitcher - and former Notre Dame wide receiver - Jeff Samardzija into the game as a pinch runner for Bumgarner.
Samardzija later scored after Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon made a throwing error on a Hunter Pence grounder, and it would ultimately stand as the winning run in a 3-1 victory.
