Report: Marlins eyeing Volquez, Shoemaker, Teheran

Looking to snap a 13-year playoff drought, the Miami Marlins' front office is scouring the majors in search of help for the rotation.

It was reported earlier Thursday that Miami is desperate to add a starter and several more names have emerged from the potential search. Kansas City Royals right-hander Edinson Volquez, Los Angeles Angels right-hander Matt Shoemaker, and Atlanta Braves right-hander Julio Teheran are among those the Marlins have expressed interest in, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

Pitcher ERA IP WHIP SO
Volquez 4.56 124.1 1.39 94
Teheran 2.71 129.2 0.96 115
Shoemaker 4.17 118.2 1.26 116

The trio of new names joins the list of Ivan Nova, Andrew Cashner, Michael Pineda, and Jeremy Hellickson as arms the Marlins have had interest in.

Miami enters play Thursday four games back in the division and occupying the second wild-card spot. Marlins starters have combined for a 4.00 ERA - the eighth-best mark in the majors - but they'll want some more experience should they wish to make a postseason run. Adam Conley and Jose Urena have less than 300 career major-league innings combined under their belt, Wei-Yin Chen is on the disabled list, and Jarred Cosart has struggled since coming back from his own injury.

Standing in the way of the Marlins making a major splash on the pitching market is a poor farm system. They likely don't have the pieces to acquire a pitcher like Teheran, so a veteran arm with a shorter contract will likely be more in their price range.
