Report: Blue Jays discussing trade for Ervin Santana

The Toronto Blue Jays' search for a starting pitcher has reportedly extended to Minnesota, as Jon Morosi of MLB Network said Sunday the club is discussing a possible trade for Twins right-hander Ervin Santana.

The report comes one day after sources told ESPN's Buster Olney the Blue Jays were "working hard" to land a starter ahead of Monday's non-waiver trade deadline.

Toronto has also been linked to lefty Rich Hill and right-hander Jeremy Hellickson.

Santana, 33, is in the second season of a four-year, $55-million deal that includes an innings-based vesting option valued at $14 million for 2019. The Dominican native owns a 3.78 ERA (3.98 FIP) with 6.3 strikeouts per nine innings this season, his second-lowest rate since 2006.

Entering play Sunday, the Blue Jays held a half-game lead over Baltimore in the American League East. Santana, meanwhile, was on the mound at Target Field against the White Sox in what could be his final start as a Twin.

Although Toronto's rotation has been a big reason for the team's success this year - Blue Jays starters rank second in the AL with a 3.72 ERA - there's been increased uncertainty over whether the club will send All-Star Aaron Sanchez to the bullpen to reduce his workload. Following the Blue Jays' acquisition of Melvin Upton Jr. this week, general manager Ross Atkins said the team was anticipating more moves as it chases a second straight AL East title.

Earlier Sunday, it was reported the Blue Jays contacted the Athletics about outfielder Josh Reddick, in addition to Hill.
