The injury-ridden New York Mets received a dose of good news late Wednesday after a near-disastrous afternoon, as pitcher Noah Syndergaard and slugger Yoenis Cespedes are expected to avoid a trip to the disabled list.

The Mets also announced that recovering right-hander Zack Wheeler received a cortisone injection for nerve irritation in his elbow, according to ESPN's Adam Rubin, and the club is optimistic he'll be fine.

Mets Nation was sent into panic mode Wednesday after Terry Collins told reporters that Syndergaard exited his start against the Kansas City Royals because of right elbow discomfort, and the team was sending him for further tests. The MRI showed no structural damage, the team said, and Syndergaard was prescribed anti-inflammatory medication. Syndergaard's been cleared to resume his normal routine, though it remains unclear if he'll be healthy enough to make his next start.

The Syndergaard scare came shortly after an ominous departure for Cespedes, who also exited after six innings because of discomfort in his left wrist. Cespedes was later diagnosed with a mild wrist sprain, and is expected to miss a couple days after receiving a cortisone shot for the pain.

Wednesday's injury fallout comes just a day after the Mets once again received bad news on key players. Right-hander Bartolo Colon exited his start after being struck by a comebacker, it was reported first baseman Lucas Duda has yet to progress to baseball activities, and Wheeler was shut down from his pitching program because of elbow discomfort.

The news continued what's been a disheartening month for the struggling Mets, who lost David Wright and Juan Lagares to injuries and have come under fire from the front office for their inconsistent play.
