The New York Mets are crossing their fingers for Yoenis Cespedes, as the center fielder was forced to leave Wednesday's game against the Kansas City Royals with left wrist discomfort sustained on a fifth-inning swing.

After fouling off a pitch from Danny Duffy, Cespedes appeared to grimace and looked to be favoring his hand. He initially remained in the game to run the bases after drawing a walk, but departed after the inning.

He and pitcher Noah Syndergaard, who left the game with elbow discomfort one inning later, went to visit a team doctor at Manhattan's Hospital for Special Surgery, according to ESPN's Adam Rubin.

Manager Terry Collins said after the game that the 30-year-old had a similar problem last year that had yet to flare up in 2016.

"I don't know what the issue is," Collins said. "I'm certainly concerned about it. Any time when you're a hitter - and you're a big hitter - and your hands and your wrists have problems, it's a concern."

Cespedes reached base safely in five of six at-bats before he departed the game (six of seven counting his fifth-inning walk), so any prolonged absence would be a serious concern for the slumping Mets.

Alejandro De Aza replaced Cespedes in center field to begin the sixth inning.
