The New York Mets are holding their breath right now.

Noah Syndergaard left Wednesday's start against the Kansas City Royals after six innings because of elbow discomfort, and is being examined by team doctors, the team announced to reporters after its 4-3 win.

He'll rejoin the team in Atlanta following his visit with the doctor, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

Syndergaard gave up three runs on eight hits during his six innings of work against Kansas City, while also throwing two wild pitches and striking out four on 91 pitches.

After arriving on the big stage last season during the Mets' improbable World Series run, Syndergaard has emerged as a bona fide ace in 2016, posting a 2.08 ERA to go along with 110 strikeouts and just 12 walks in 91 innings. The 23-year-old also saw his workload increase, as he's thrown over 90 pitches in all but one of his starts this year.

The Syndergaard news made Wednesday's win a particularly painful one, as the Mets also saw Yoenis Cespedes depart in the fifth inning with wrist discomfort.
