As they had over the previous three seasons, the Royals have feasted on the Twins in 2016, going 13-3. Kansas City's 51-22 record versus Minnesota since 2013 translates to the best winning percentage (.699) in any series over that span (minimum 30 games).

By losing to Seattle on Sunday, 4-3, the Twins reached 100 losses in a single season for just the second time since the franchise moved to Minnesota in 1961. Only the 1982 Twins (60-102) suffered more losses.

The Royals are 6.0 games out of the second wild-card spot in the American League with only six games to play. Kansas City is coming of a 12-run, 19-hit outburst in a 12-9 victory at Detroit on Sunday, both of which represented the Royals' best totals since June 18.

Jose Berrios' 8.88 ERA is the second highest ever by a Minnesota Twin who made at least 10 starts. Only Sean Bergman, with an ERA of 9.66 in 2000, compiled a higher ERA in the Minnesota era (since 1961).

Ian Kennedy has done a much better job controlling the long ball over the past two months. Since July 25, Kennedy has surrendered 0.61 home runs per nine innings, the third-lowest rate in the majors (minimum 50 IP). Prior to July 25, Kennedy's 2.14 home runs per nine innings were the most in MLB (minimum 75 IP).

With three hits and a pair of RBI on Sunday, Kendrys Morales raised his RBI total to 28 since Labor Day (September 5), six more than anyone else over that span (22 by Hanley Ramirez). And with a home run on Saturday, Morales became the first Royal to reach 30 in a season since Jermaine Dye in 2000 (33).

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- When the Kansas City Royals take the field Thursday against the Minnesota Twins, for the first time since near the end of the 2013 season, there will be nothing much at stake.
The Royals, who have been in the past two World Series and won it all last November, were officially eliminated from the postseason Wednesday night. While they scored three runs with two out in the eighth to pull out a 5-2 triumph over the Twins, they were soon ousted from the wildcard playoff race when the Baltimore Orioles rallied with a two-run ninth to beat the Toronto Blue Jays.

Royals play Twins in 1st game since postseason elimination

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)  Minnesota Twins closer Brandon Kintzler was concentrating on Terrance Gore, the Kansas City Royals' pinch-runner, not Paulo Orlando, the hitter.
After Salvador Perez's pinch-hit RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning pulled the Royals within a run, Gore ran for him. With Orlando, who had four hits to match his career high, at bat, Kintzler picked Gore off first base to preserve the Twins' 7-6 victory Thursday night.
