The Red Sox beat the Orioles, 5-3, in Baltimore on Thursday, completing a four-game sweep. Boston has now won eight in a row, and in doing so has opened up a 5.5-game lead in the AL East. Its magic number to clinch the division sits at five.

The Rays beat the Yankees, 2-0, at home on Thursday, avoiding a three-game sweep. The Rays are assured of finishing in last place in the division, the first time they'll do so since 2007, when they were still known as the Devil Rays.

The Red Sox hold the edge in the season series, 9-7, but the Rays are 4-3 at home against Boston. They're the only AL East team with a winning record at home against the Red Sox.

Drew Pomeranz allowed four runs (all earned) in 3.2 innings against the Yankees on Sunday, taking a no-decision. In his last two starts, he has allowed a combined nine runs in just 5.2 innings. In two starts against the Rays this year, Pomeranz is 0-1 with a 3.55 ERA.

Chris Archer allowed three runs (all earned) in 6.1 innings to the Orioles last Friday, taking a no-decision. It was the 10th start in his last 11 that Archer has allowed three or fewer earned runs. Archer has struggled in his four starts against Boston this season, going 0-4 with a 6.65 ERA.

As David Ortiz heads into his final series at Tropicana, he already knows he'll leave as the all-time home run leader as a visiting player. His 34 home runs in are more than anyone else, with Alex Rodriguez in second with 30, and long-time Red Sox teammate Manny Ramirez in third with 25.

Boston clinched a postseason berth with Saturday night's victory, but the math was complicated enough that the Red Sox, who haven't won 10 straight in September since 1949, didn't celebrate anything more than a win in the clubhouse.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP)  Dustin Pedroia turned what looked like a sure out into the go-ahead run.
Pedroia used nifty baserunning to score from first base on David Ortiz's double in the 10th inning and the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 on Sunday for their 11th consecutive win.
