Seattle failed to complete a three-game sweep in Toronto on Sunday, falling 2-0. The Mariners have been shut out just once in their last 54 games (three times in first 48 games of the season).

The Pirates defeated the Phillies, 5-4, at home on Sunday for their fifth win in their past seven games. The Pirates are 17-8 (.680) in their last 25 contests -- best of any team in the majors since June 24.

The Mariners and Pirates have played 12 games against each other all-time, with Seattle holding a slight 7-5 advantage. The M's and Bucs split two games earlier this season at Safeco Field (June 28-29).

Felix Hernandez did not receive a decision last Wednesday, allowing five runs on ten hits over 6.2 innings in his first start since May 27. In three career starts versus Pittsburgh, Hernandez is 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA, his lowest against any team he has faced at least three times.

Francisco Liriano allowed just two earned runs over 6.2 innings against the Brewers on Thursday, picking up his sixth win of the season. It was Liriano's first start without walking a batter since April 30.

Since the All-Star break, Nelson Cruz is batting .345 with two homers, seven RBI, and four multi-hit games. Seattle is 18-11 this year when Cruz has two or more hits.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates remain in contention for a playoff spot, but not without continued uncertainty regarding their rotation.
Right-hander Gerrit Cole (5-6, 2.99 ERA) will try to get back to .500, far below what the Pirates expected from him, on Wednesday when Pittsburgh closes out a two-game series with the Seattle Mariners.

Cole pitched a three-hitter and slumping Andrew McCutchen had a three-run home run among his three hits as the Pittsburgh Pirates rolled to a 10-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night.
