The Royals defeated the A's, 5-3, in Oakland yesterday, recording their fourth straight triumph, and improving to 14-5 since games of June 7 overall. Kansas City has posted five 4+ game win streaks in 2015 -- tied with the Rays for most in the AL.

The Astros beat the Yankees, 3-1, at home on Sunday, salvaging a split with the Bronx Bombers in their four-game set over the weekend. Houston has a +45 run differential after the sixth inning this season (2-0 yesterday) -- best of any MLB club.

Tonight marks the first meeting of the season between these two division leaders. The Royals and Astros split six games last year, each club sweeping three from the other on the road.

Including his win over the Mariners one week ago (6.0 IP, 1 ER), Joe Blanton is 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA in his first two starts with the Royals. Blanton has started seven games vs. the Astros during his career (3-2, 2.77 ERA), going at least six innings and allowing three or fewer runs in each of those outings.

Lance McCullers went six innings and allowed just one run (earned) last Wednesday vs. the Angels in Anaheim, but was saddled with a no-decision for his efforts. Including a complete-game win over the O's on June 3, McCullers is 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA in four career starts at Minute Maid Park.

Carlos Correa had two doubles in three at-bats vs. the Yankees yesterday, and is now batting .370 with two homers and eight RBI in his last six games overall. Correa is hitting .342 (13-for-38) at Minute Maid Park since being called up on June 8.

A home series sweep of the AL leading Kansas City Royals might provide another reason to believe the Houston Astros can remain a serious playoff contender as they approach the halfway point of the season.
They can do so by preventing Edinson Volquez from winning a fifth consecutive start Wednesday night.

HOUSTON (AP)  Jose Altuve had three hits and scored the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning to help the Houston Astros complete a three-game sweep of a the Kansas City Royals with a 6-5 win on Wednesday night.
The game was tied at 5 in the seventh when Kelvin Herrera (1-2) plunked Altuve on the forearm. Altuve stole second and reached third on a lineout. He put Houston on top when he beat the tag at the plate on a fielder's choice by Chris Carter.
