The Orioles beat the Tigers, 12-3, on Thursday, snapping their three-game (regular season) home losing streak to Detroit in the process. The 12 runs put up by the Orioles in Game 1 were the most in a single game in franchise history (since 1954).

Justin Verlander went 3-0 with a 2.89 ERA in his last four starts of the 2014 regular season. Verlander, who has won seven postseason games all-time (tied for second most among active pitchers), has never lost a game vs. the O's at Camden Yards (7-0, 2.84 ERA in eight career starts).

Wei-Yin Chen went 9-3 with a 2.89 ERA in 15 starts since July 1, and his 16 overall wins were tops on the Orioles in 2014. Chen, who defeated the Yankees in his only career postseason start on October 8, 2012, is 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA in two career outings vs. the Tigers.

The Tigers hit three solo homers yesterday to account for all their runs in Game 1. Ninety-five of Detroit's 155 home runs in 2014 where hit with nobody on base -- tied for sixth most in the majors (Baltimore was first with 119 solo homers).

MLB's leading home-run hitter in 2014, Nelson Cruz, went deep in the first inning of Game 1. Cruz, who hit just one homer in his last 19 regular season games, is batting .417 (5-for-12) with two homers and six RBI in his last three games vs. the Tigers overall (dating to May 13 of regular season).

Detroit has dropped Game 1 of an ALDS twice in franchise history, and came back to win both of those series (2006 vs. Yankees and 2011 vs. Yankees). Baltimore has taken Game 1 of an ALDS series three times. The O's won both of the previous two matchups in four games (1996 vs. Cleveland and 1997 vs. Seattle).
