Valencia fires Ayestaran after terrible start to season

Reuters

Valencia announced Tuesday the club has fired manager Pako Ayestaran following the team's dismal start to the 2016-17 La Liga season, with Voro Gonzalez once again serving as an interim manager until a replacement can be found.

Valencia has lost each of its first four matches, including a humiliating 4-2 defeat at home to Las Palmas to open the campaign. A 1-0 loss to Eibar was followed by a 3-2 loss to Real Betis before a 2-1 defeat against Athletic Bilbao brought a close to Ayestaran's time at the helm of Los Che.

As such, Gonzalez once again returns as interim manager, a role he served before Gary Neville was appointed last season as replacement for the fired Nuno Espirito Santo.

If the names seem plentiful, that's because Valencia has moved through managers quite quickly over the last five years, with eight different bosses taking the helm of the club since July 2012.

While Valencia has remained one of the stronger teams in La Liga despite the turmoil, recent moves - including Neville's appointment - have been regarded as failures and embarrassments by the club's fervent supporters.

It's why the team majority owner Peter Lim has faced plenty of criticism in the stands for those appointments, and while the club ended Ayestaran's tenure before the season became truly unsalvageable, there is no indication as to who the next long-term boss will be at the Mestalla Stadium.

Ayestaran oversaw Valencia from the end of March and helped it avoid relegation. In May, he signed a contract extension until June 2018. That contract, in the end, did not come to term.
