Gomis, Ayew score as Swansea defeats Manchester United, again

Swansea City won its third consecutive match against Manchester United, as the upstart Swans secured a 2-1 victory at the Liberty Stadium with a spirited team effort Sunday.

Garry Monk's side, which was the only club to beat United twice last season, applied the pressure during the second half following a goalless first interval.

Where Bafetimbi Gomis and Andre Ayew go, so go the Swans, who again rode the efforts of their two star attacking talents to improve to 2-2-0, climbing to fourth in the table behind Leicester City, Crystal Palace, and United's crosstown rivals Manchester City.

After a Juan Mata goal for United early in the second half - on a whimpering cross from full-back Luke Shaw against the run of play - Swansea seemed to have all of the attacking impetus, equalizing in the 61st minute.

Summer signing Ayew got on the end of an ideal cross from Icelandic international Gylfi Sigurdsson on the right flank, placing a firm header beyond the reach of United 'keeper Sergio Romero for his fourth goal of the young season.

Swansea supporters at the Liberty Stadium were in a near-deafening frenzy following the Ayew marker, and the dust barely settled before crowd favourite Gomis scored his fifth of the season.

The lanky Frenchman got on the end of a perfectly weighted pass from Ayew. The ex-Marseille man struck on the outside of his left foot, bending it into the path of Gomis, who slotted it beneath the grasp of Romero.

Swansea centre-back Ashley Williams secured the three points in the match's dying minutes, as Wayne Rooney broke into the box seemingly unmarked, only for the Welshman to put in a last-ditch tackle as Rooney demanded a penalty.

Referee Martin Atkinson was having none of it, and Swansea saw out a brilliant result, the crowd serenading its appreciative players with "We're gonna win the league, we're gonna win the league."
