Report: Newcastle in advanced negotiations with PSV over Georginio Wijnaldum
Newcastle United is reportedly one step ahead of its Tyne-Wear rival when it comes to the pursuit of PSV Eindhoven captain Georginio Wijnaldum.
According to Sky Sports, Newcastle is in advanced talks with PSV over Wijnaldum despite the lack of a formal bid. Newly appointed manager Steve McClaren, who enjoyed two stints in the Eredivisie, is apparently looking to make his first signing a player with whom he's familiar.
It was reported at the end of June that Newcastle's eternal rival, Sunderland, had offered in excess of £11 million for Wijnaldum. However, Sky Sports' report makes no mention of Sunderland, and Newcastle is allegedly keen to sign the midfielder before flying out to the United States on Saturday for a summer tour.
PSV is reportedly seeking upwards of £14 million for Wijnaldum, who was named Dutch Footballer of the Year following a 2014-15 season in which he notched 14 goals and three assists as PSV captured the Eredivisie title.
A number of Dutch players already feature for Newcastle, including Tim Krul, Daryl Janmaat, Vurnon Anita, and Siem de Jong.
