Report: Lampard finally signs NYCFC contract

The saga has, mercifully, come to an end.

After much misinformation and speculation, Frank Lampard has reportedly signed what was for a long time a mythical contract with nascent MLS side New York City FC.

The Associated Press reports that Lampard finally put pen to paper on a two-year contract with the MLS club, signing the deal earlier this week that will see him join NYCFC in July - midway through the MLS season.

The timeline means that NYCFC and Manchester City both misled the public with regards to the status of Lampard's murky deal that allowed him to not only begin the Premier League season with City, but extend his deal until the end of the EPL campaign.

NYCFC stated last July that the English midfielder signed a two-year deal with the team in August 2014. Shortly after, City claimed Lampard was heading back to England on a loan deal that would expire in January.

After all the dust has settled, it's clear that Lampard actually signed a permanent deal with City, and had only agreed to a commitment to sign with NYCFC.

In essence, NYCFC used the initial Lampard "signing" in an attempt to sell tickets and generate buzz for the team's opening season, while also hoping to sell the player's jersey after his (farcical) unveiling.
