Manchester City 'have no agreement in place' with NYCFC over Lampard's registration

The Premier League issued a statement on Thursday in an attempt to end the confusion surrounding Frank Lampard's contract extension with Manchester City.

Lampard was initially set to join nascent Major League Soccer club New York City FC as a designated player ahead of their inaugural season, but City, where he's spent the 2014-15 campaign on loan, signed him to a contract extension just before the end of the calendar year, ensuring that he stays at the Etihad Stadium for the remainder of the Premier League season.

It was an extension that had many scratching their heads given the partnership between City and NYCFC, and – to the fury of the MLS club's supporters – there's now the real possibility of Lampard staying with Manuel Pellegrini's side until 2016 as another year remains on his contract with City Football Group.

However, despite the sketchy handling of the situation, the Premier League maintains that no rules were breached by City regarding Lampard's extension.

Frank Lampard is registered as a Manchester City player until the end of the 2014-15 season.

The Premier League has sought and received assurances from Manchester City that there is no agreement in place between the Club or City Football Group with New York City FC relating to the player.
