The pitch was appalling, but Egypt got the job done.

On Saturday, at Stade de Port-Gentil, Egypt sealed a 1-0 Group D victory over Uganda at the Africa Cup of Nations. The result put the Pharaohs on the brink of qualifying for the tournament's quarter-finals and knocked out the Cranes, which are on African football's most prestigious stage for the first time in almost 40 years.

The fixture itself was a boring affair, not helped by a dreadful pitch. But, just when it looked set to end as a scoreless draw, Abdallah El Said collected a pass from Mohamed Salah in the 89th minute and one-timed the ball between Denis Onyango's legs.

Egypt needs just one point to progress to the quarter-finals, but the Pharaohs will have to dig deep to secure qualification against Ghana, who is undefeated at the Africa Cup of Nations. Both national teams are yet to concede a goal at the tournament, and the match marks a repeat of the 2010 final.
