Davide Santon is reportedly just one step away from returning to northeast England.
According to Louise Taylor of the Guardian, Santon is set to join Sunderland from Internazionale in a transfer valued at £4 million, as an impending medical is all that stands between the Italian full-back and the Tyneside club. He was apparently also targeted by Crystal Palace but his partner, Chloe Sanderson, is from Newcastle, England and the couple is keen to return there.
Santon allegedly left Inter's training camp on Thursday, and personal terms with Sunderland are believed to be all but agreed.
Of course, Santon joined Newcastle United in 2011 but returned to Inter three-and-a-half years later after suffering a long-term knee injury and subsequently struggling to find first-team opportunities. Once compared to Paolo Maldini, the full-back, 24 years old, is yet to live up to the hype that surrounded him at a young age.
While Santon featured primarily as a left-back at Newcastle, he is reportedly likely to play as a right-back under Sam Allardyce at Sunderland.
