Rodriguez's late goal gives Southampton draw with Sunderland

Southampton and Sunderland shared the points Saturday at St Mary's after Saints substitute Jay Rodriguez scored late to cancel out Jermain Defoe's goal from the penalty spot in a 1-1 draw.

The game got off to a lively start but both sides struggled to find the target early on.

Southampton (0-2-1) had the better chances in the first half but young keeper Jordan Pickford was in inspired form to keep out two shots from Charlie Austin.

Pickford then made two more excellent saves in the second half, thwarting both Shane Long and Nathan Redmond within two minutes of each other.

The visitors grabbed a goal from the spot with 10 minutes left when Defoe hit the back of the net after being brought down by Jose Fonte, seemingly giving David Moyes his first win for the Black Cats (0-1-2).

But Southampton responded in the 85th minute as Rodriguez stole the headlines by burying the ball past Pickford.

The result keeps both sides sitting just above the relegation zone with Claude Puel joining Moyes in the continued search for his first win with his new club.
