Burnley relegated from Premier League despite win at Hull

HULL, England (AP) Burnley was relegated from the English Premier League after just one season despite a 1-0 win at Hull that dropped the home side into the bottom three on Saturday.

Danny Ings' 62nd-minute strike ended Burnley's goal drought of more than 10 hours but results elsewhere sent the team down with two games left.

''The fight in the team was phenomenal from start to finish,'' Ings said, ''but it came too late.''

Hull could be joining Burnley in the second-tier League Championship after slipping to third to last, two points adrift of safety. Steve Bruce's side has games left against Tottenham away, then Manchester United at home, and is looking the most vulnerable of the teams above Burnley and last-place Queens Park Rangers, which could be relegated on Sunday.

Ings swiveled and powered in a left-footed shot for Burnley's first goal in seven matches. The striker's dip in form has coincided with his team's lack of goals.

''Scoring goals has been our problem,'' said Burnley manager Sean Dyche, whose team is the lowest scorer in the Premier League with 27 goals in 36 games. ''Our shape has been good, our energy and work rate has been terrific. The players will grow from these experiences.

''Statistically we knew it would be tough to stay up, but mentally the players have been terrific.''

Hull midfielder Robbie Brady twice struck the crossbar with shots from free kicks in either half.

Burnley provisionally climbed above QPR and is seven points behind fourth-from-bottom Newcastle.

''I believe we're in decent shape to bounce straight back,'' Dyche said. ''There will be definite growth in the players. I can imagine we will be competitive in the (League) Championship next season.''
