Buffon on Champions League finals loss: 'I really did believe we would win'

Whether he's winning or losing, Gianluigi Buffon isn't one to lose control of his emotions.

The veteran netminder was full of confidence in his side's chances of winning the Champions League, despite the overwhelming odds going against them as they prepared to take on a supremely talented Barcelona outfit.

But it wasn't meant to be as Juventus went on to lose their sixth Champions League final during a 3-1 loss in Berlin.

"I am a guy who always knows how to handle moments of great joy and disappointment with balance," Buffon told Sky Sport Italia (courtesy of ESPNFC).

"This is one of the disappointments sport gives you, but before that we shared many great moments of joy with our fans.

"It was a shame not to have the final to really finish off this journey, but at one point I really did believe."

Unlike the stone-faced 'keeper, Buffon's teammate Andrea Pirlo couldn't hide his emotions afterwards. With his career with the Italian champs nearing an end, tears began to flow in the moments after the final whistle, a display of emotion rarely seen from the 36-year-old.

"We are all disappointed and it is in a way very pleasing to see Andrea express his sentiments in such a strong way," Buffon said.
