Wayne Rooney on win over Slovenia: 'Going behind really woke us up'

England's 3-1 win over Slovenia in Euro 2016 qualifying Saturday saw Roy Hodgson's side notch three goals in a 13-minute span after Jordan Henderson gave the visitors the lead with a 57th-minute own goal.

Until that point, the match had been painfully slow moving, with both teams failing to register a single shot on target in the first half.

There was little indication that things would change after the interval, but speaking after the fixture, Wayne Rooney, who won his 100th international cap, indicated that Henderson's own goal was just the wake-up call that England needed.

"We had to show our character and that's what we did," Rooney told the Guardian. "We produced a great reaction and it was a good day for us in the end, even though it had been tough at the start. 

"Obviously I'm proud to have won 100 caps and ended up on the winning side. It is a great honour to represent England so often and hopefully I will do so on many more occasions, but not many players have reached 100 and no one can take that away from me."

Rooney was the one to get England's comeback underway when he converted a penalty that marked his 44th goal for the Three Lions, bringing him level with Jimmy Greaves for third on England's all-time scoring list.
