Vidal hits out at referee: 'This robbery can't happen in the Champions League'

Arturo Vidal is pointing the finger at Vikor Kassai, the Hungarian referee who controversially sent off the Chilean midfielder in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

After some awful officiating resulted in Vidal being incorrectly sent off in the 84th minute, Real Madrid went on to score three goals in extra time - two of which were offside - and claim a 6-3 victory on aggregate. The product of CSD Colo Colo clearly won the ball while tackling Marco Asensio, but Kassai saw it differently and issued the South American player his second yellow card of the night.

"When Madrid got scared, the referee began his show," Vidal said, according to the Guardian. "This robbery can't happen in the Champions League. We felt it a lot and you start to wonder a bit. We wanted to go through and there's a lot of anger in that a match of such intensity is decided by the referee. He made a lot of mistakes and knocked us out of the Champions League.

"When (referees) embarrass you like that, it's really hard to take. It makes you very angry."

Vidal's undeserved sending-off was the turning point in the second leg, paving the way for Real Madrid's victory in extra time. But the anger wasn't just felt by Bayern's players. Carlo Ancelotti was also among those who criticised Kassai's performance and called for video assistant referees.

It's worth noting that Vidal was reportedly on the verge of completing a move to Real Madrid in 2015 before ultimately joining Bayern from Juventus for a fee of €37 million.
