VIDEO: Augsburg 'keeper sorry for tampering with spot before missed penalty

Augsburg shot-stopper Marwin Hitz has apologised for his unsportsmanlike behaviour which resulted in a bodged penalty and helped his team squeak a 1-0 victory over Cologne.

The Swiss 'keeper spun his studs into the penalty spot, twisting up mud and grass, culminating in Anthony Modeste slipping when he attempted to give his side the lead from 12 yards.

Just six minutes later, Raul Bobadilla scored for the away side to take all the spoils at RheinEnergieStadion.

"That wasn't the most fair thing to do," Hitz admitted to the Guardian's Marcus Christenson. "When I see that, that's not me. It won't happen again.

"I have never saved a penalty before so I thought I would just make the taker a little bit unsure. A lot of things come together when something like this happens: a full stadium, a frantic game, and ... one thinking that it wasn't a penalty to start off with."

Hitz also expressed his regret at his actions in a tweet which translates as: "I want to apologise for my action before the penalty. That was not OK and I won't do it again."

To make matters worse for Cologne, the result allowed Mainz to take a three-point lead over it in the table, lifting Mainz to seventh in the Bundesliga.

There have been calls for Hitz to receive a retrospective ban for his actions.
