Federer leads Switzerland to 1st Davis Cup title

Sweet Swiss success.

Switzerland won its first Davis Cup title by a score of 3-1 on Sunday morning in Lille, France. Roger Federer clinched it for his country, defeating Richard Gasquet in straight sets to seal the deal.

The Davis Cup eluded Federer for years, as he won everything that could be won in tennis. But the wait is over. Federer has won it all:

The 33-year-old said after the match that the win wasn't about him, though, but was for Swiss tennis fans:

It's not for me, I've won enough in my career and did not need to tick any empty boxes. I'm just happy for everybody else. I'm happy we could live a great tennis historic moment in our country.

Federer, who was dealing with a back injury suffered in the ATP Finals, also gave it up to his team:

I'm happy I was able to stay calm and play a good match, and I'm really happy for the guys in the team, everybody worked incredibly hard to get me match ready. Stan (Wawrinka) has put in so much effort over the years and played an unbelievable weekend that gave me the opportunity today. I'm very much aware of that, this one is for the boys.

The Swiss, a dominant team led by Federer and Wawrinka, were too much for the French to handle. Gasquet, who replaced Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Sunday's singles match after Tsonga withdrew due to an elbow injury, gave it his all, but falls to 2-13 lifetime against Federer.
