Manchester United turned the knife on their struggling archrivals Sunday with a battling 2-1 win at Liverpool.

Harry Maguire headed in the visitors' winning goal in the 84th minute after Cody Gakpo gave Liverpool hopes of a comeback victory with his equalizer from close range.

Bryan Mbeumo shocked the hosts with a well-worked opening goal in just the second minute.

Liverpool have now lost in four straight matches for the first time since November 2014 under Brendan Rodgers. They've fallen to Crystal Palace, Galatasaray, Chelsea, and Manchester United over that miserable spell. Their latest setback is their first home defeat to United since 2016.

The result also marked the first time that Ruben Amorim has recorded back-to-back wins as Manchester United boss. The Portuguese coach's first match at the helm was in November 2024.

Liverpool weren't at their best but were frustrated at Anfield, breaching Senne Lammens in United's goal only once despite outshooting Amorim's side 19-12. Gakpo hit the woodwork three times through one curling effort, a deflected cross, and a powerful drive before he scored from a couple of yards. He then failed with an opportunity to level again in the 86th minute when he rose unmarked for a header and somehow sent it wide.

Gakpo wasn't the only player who endured a difficult outing. Mohamed Salah, the reigning PFA Player of the Year after Liverpool won last season's Premier League title, was also largely ineffectual and is yet to complete a dribble in the Premier League this campaign.
