It turns out the Dallas Mavericks shopped Luka Doncic to at least one other team before dealing the five-time All-Star to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Mavs and Minnesota Timberwolves informally discussed a Doncic-Anthony Edwards swap in the weeks leading up to the blockbuster trade with the Lakers, sources told The Athletic's Sam Amick.

Mavs president of basketball operations and general manager Nico Harrison reportedly reached out to the T-Wolves to see if they'd be willing to part with Edwards but was promptly shut down by Minnesota.

The T-Wolves were apparently stunned that Dallas' brass was considering a Doncic trade, Amick adds.

Harrison previously said he'd only spoken with the Lakers about a Doncic deal, singling out Anthony Davis' defense among the main reasons to complete a trade with Los Angeles.

The Mavs and Lakers eventually struck a deal Feb. 1 following nearly a month of discussions.

Edwards is averaging a career-high 27.5 points, six boards, 4.6 assists, and 1.2 steals across 57 appearances this season. Minnesota signed Edwards to a five-year, $260-million designated rookie maximum extension in July 2023 to keep him under contract through the 2029-2030 campaign.
