The Cincinnati Reds signed first baseman Dominic Smith to a one-year contract, the team announced Thursday.

Financial details of the deal are not yet known.

Smith was released by the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday after hitting .237/.317/.390 with six home runs and 34 RBIs in 83 games. The Red Sox really liked Smith but had no room for him on the roster following the return of Triston Casas, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

The 29-year-old Smith will provide the Reds with another experienced veteran. He's played 683 games for three different teams during eight big-league seasons.

Cincinnati has three players with experience at first base on the injured list - Jeimer Candelario, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, and Nick Martini. Ty France is acting as the team's starting first baseman.

Smith's best campaign came during the shortened 2020 season when he received down-ballot MVP consideration after posting a .993 OPS in 50 games for the New York Mets.

In addition to signing Smith, the Reds placed outfielder Jake Fraley on the 10-day injured list with a right knee sprain and designated right-hander Brooks Kriske for assignment.
