The Chicago White Sox added another veteran arm to their rotation by agreeing to a one-year, $1.75-million contract with right-hander Chris Flexen, the team announced Saturday.

The contract also includes up to $1 million worth of performance bonuses, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.

The White Sox designated catcher Carlos Pérez for assignment to make room for Flexen on their roster.

Flexen, 29, is coming off a difficult 2023 season he split between the Seattle Mariners and Colorado Rockies. In 29 total appearances, 16 of which were starts, he posted a 6.86 ERA, 6.22 FIP, and 1.67 WHIP with 74 strikeouts and 38 walks.

The Mariners initially signed Flexen two years ago on the heels of his bounce-back 2020 season in the Korea Baseball Organization. He set career highs across the board during his first year with Seattle in 2021 but was unable to keep that success going. Flexen was eventually moved to the bullpen before getting designated for assignment this past June.

He'll bring yet another experienced arm to a young, rebuilding White Sox squad that needs pitchers with the ability to soak up innings. Flexen's versatility could also benefit the South Siders, as he can work as either a starter, reliever, or swingman.

Flexen is the second veteran starter to join the White Sox this offseason, following the addition of Erick Fedde earlier this month.
