Major League Baseball's Platinum Glove awards, honoring the top overall defender in each league, were handed out Friday.

St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado claimed his sixth straight National League Platinum Glove, by far the most in the award's history. The American League honor went to New York Yankees catcher Jose Trevino.

Arenado was his usual stellar self at the hot corner for the Cardinals, making just 12 errors in 379 defensive chances. His 19 defensive runs saved and 15 outs above average both ranked second at his position, and he led all qualified third basemen with a 13.0 ultimate zone rating.

The 31-year-old has dominated MLB's defensive awards over his 10-year career. In addition to his six straight Platinum Gloves, Arenado's 10 Gold Gloves are tied with Mike Schmidt for the second-most ever among third basemen.

Trevino, 29, stabilized the catcher position for the Yankees with his stellar glovework. He threw out a league-leading 33% of would-be base-stealers and tallied 21 defensive runs saved in 820 1/3 innings behind the plate. Trevino also led catchers in framing runs (17) and strike rate (53.9%).

Trevino, the first AL catcher to win the Platinum Glove, joins four-time winner Yadier Molina as the only backstops to earn the honor. He's also the first Yankee to win the award.

First handed out in 2011, the Platinum Glove award is given to the top defender in each league as determined by fan voting. All Gold Glove winners are automatically eligible for the Platinum Glove.
