Veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor reached an agreement with the Houston Texans on a one-year deal worth up to $12.5 million, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Texans are giving Taylor an incentive-laden contract, as the pact's base salary is less than half of its maximum value, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports.

Taylor expressed his excitement on social media Tuesday.

The signal-caller spent the previous two seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers. After backing up Philip Rivers in 2019, the 31-year-old started the 2020 season opener for the Chargers but was sidelined in Week 2 after a team doctor accidentally punctured his lung before kickoff. Taylor eventually lost the starting job to rookie Justin Herbert.

It's unclear who will start at quarterback for the Texans in 2021. Superstar Deshaun Watson reportedly requested a trade after his relationship with team ownership deteriorated amid the process that led to general manager Nick Caserio's hiring in January.

The Texans will be Taylor's fifth team. He previously spent time with the Baltimore Ravens (2011-14), Buffalo Bills (2015-17), and Cleveland Browns (2018).

Taylor has posted a 24-21-1 record as a starter since entering the NFL as a sixth-round pick out of Virginia Tech in 2011.
