The 2021 season will see a familiar face return to the Michigan sideline.

Mike Hart has agreed to terms to become the Wolverines' running backs coach, the school announced Wednesday.

Hart played for Michigan from 2004-07, earning Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors and three first-team All-Big Ten selections. He set school records with 5,040 rushing yards and 1,015 carries while tallying 41 touchdowns during his time in Ann Arbor.

"Michigan has always held a special place in my heart," Hart said in a statement. "It is a place that always believed in me and a place that I have always believed in. I am excited to join Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan staff and can't wait to get to work with a talented running back group."

Hart, 32, played three NFL seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. He moved into the coaching world following his playing career, working with Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, and Syracuse before spending the past four seasons with Indiana. The Hoosiers promoted Hart to associate head coach for the 2020 season.

Jay Harbaugh, son of Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh, had served as Michigan's running backs coach since 2017.

Michigan signed Jim Harbaugh to a four-year contract extension after the Wolverines finished the 2020 season with a 2-4 record.
