Boston Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez has decided to not opt out of his contract, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

Martinez has two seasons and $38.75 million remaining on a five-year, $110-million deal he signed with Boston in February 2018.

The three-time All-Star said in early September that he didn't want to test free agency after many teams lost money due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Martinez owns a career .938 OPS with 86 home runs over three seasons with the Red Sox. However, the 33-year-old struggled during the shortened 2020 campaign, slashing .213/.291/.389 in 54 games.
