Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire retired Saturday, general manager Al Avila announced.

"He mentioned to me he was going to retire, and he wasn't feeling well from a health perspective," Avila said, according to Jason Beck of MLB.com.

Gardenhire's retirement is effective immediately. Lloyd McClendon will manage the Tigers for the rest of the season.

The 62-year-old planned to retire at the end of the season, but a recent bout of food poisoning combined with stomach problems and the stress of managing the Tigers led to the decision.

"This is the right thing for me to do right now," Gardenhire said, according to MLive's Evan Woodberry.

Gardenhire was in his third season as Detroit's manager, amassing a 132-241 record. Before joining the Tigers in 2018, the veteran skipper managed the Minnesota Twins for 13 seasons from 2002-2014.

He was AL Manager of the Year in 2010.
