Kings goalie coach Bill Ranford talks about his club's approach to managing goalie tandem
The Kings surprised many observers in the hockey world with their decision to start third-string goaltender Martin Jones ahead of backup Ben Scrivens for Wednesday night's game in Toronto.
Not only did Jones play on Tuesday night in Montreal, but Scrivens was originally acquired from the Maple Leafs this summer. In fact, the Maple Leafs still pay the portion of Scrivens' salary that they agreed to retain in the transaction.
On Wednesday afternoon Kings goalie coach Bill Ranford appeared on TSN Radio 1050 in Toronto and discussed the Kings' decision making processes when it comes to managing their unheralded, over-achieving goaltender platoon. "I don't make those decisions," Ranford said laughing. "That's the decision of our head coach Darryl Sutter, he's the one who makes those decisions with our club."
Ranford continued and discussed how the Kings usually decide on which goaltender to start:
"Most times, y'know, it'll be discussed as a staff and then Darryl always makes the final decision.
Obviously the question mark was the game last night against Montreal and Darryl just really liked the way (Jones) came in with zero notice when Scrivens went down in warm-ups. On the last shot of warm-up: Jones went in and did a good job for us.
I think it was a little bit of a gut feeling that Darryl felt Jones was the guy for last night, and he was outstanding especially early in the game."
Beyond the fact that Scrivens has performed extremely well this season and the Kings are facing his old team on Wednesday; research has shown that goaltenders who start back-to-back games usually perform worse in the second game.
