Jets win in OT after Patriots defer on coin toss

The New York Jets kept their playoff hopes alive Sunday, defeating the New England Patriots 26-20 in overtime.

Things may have turned out differently for the Patriots if not for their puzzling decision to defer on the coin toss. Special teams captain Matthew Slater won by correctly calling heads, but told the referee the Patriots would like to kick off to start overtime.

ESPN's Kevin Seifert has the transcript of what was said:

The Jets ended up winning the game on a 6-yard pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Eric Decker to improve to 10-5.

It was a big afternoon for Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who finished with eight catches for 115 yards and two touchdowns, and became the first NFL player with 100 receptions in six seasons. He also set a Jets single-season record for receptions, breaking Al Toon's mark of 93.

Fitzpatrick, meanwhile, tied a franchise record with his 29th touchdown pass of the season. He finished the game 26-of-41 for 296 yards and three touchdowns.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was 22-of-31 for 231 yards with one touchdown and an interception.

The Jets can clinch a playoff berth with a win over the Buffalo Bills next week.
