Jamaal Charles had stem cell treatments on torn ACL

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles is doing everything in his power to return from a torn ACL stronger than ever, including trying out an innovative medical procedure that could help speed up his recovery.

Charles told Jenny Vrentas of The MMQB that he underwent a stem cell procedure in addition to surgery to repair his ACL, and has since returned for an additional round of stem cell treatments.

He's had to rehab a torn ACL before, having suffered the injury in Week 2 of the 2011 season. He came back strong, rushing for 1,509 yards the following season.

The eight-year veteran is on a slightly tighter schedule this time around, with his most recent injury occurring in Week 5.

Charles said the stem cell treatments could help him get back on the field faster than after his 2011 injury.

"It's something different," he said. "Every year, somebody comes out with something different. When I tore my left ACL four years ago, I didn't do it. This is a new thing that came out to get you back faster, so I just tried it."
