The Miami Dolphins released veteran kicker Caleb Sturgis on Saturday, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
Sturgis converted fewer than 80 percent of his field-goal attempts in both of his first two seasons, leaving him open to competition for the starting job. Andrew Franks, an undrafted rookie, seized the opportunity and will now serve as the Dolphins' placekicker. As a former fifth-round draft pick, Sturgis could get a look with another team at some point this season.
