Matt Leinart claims Kurt Warner ran the Cardinals' offense, not Ken Whisenhunt
At least one person thinks the Tennessee Titans made the wrong decision in hiring former San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator and Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt to be their new head coach.
Matt Leinart, a backup quarterback for Whisenhunt in Arizona, said during an interview on "Fox Sports Live" that it was retired quarterback Kurt Warner -- and not Whisenhunt -- who ran the Cardinals' offense during the team's run to the Super Bowl in 2008.
"I don't think [Whisenhunt in Tennessee is] a great fit, and I don't think it's great timing," Leinart said, via ArizonaSports.com. "You look at his tenure in Arizona -- only two years, he had success, and in those two years, Kurt Warner ran that football team -- I was a part of it."
"Every single Monday, Kurt Warner would come in an implement 20-to-30 new plays which he would say 'I want these in my game plan.' We became a spread offense and we became Kurt Warner's offense. Then Kurt Warner retires, they go 5-11 twice and they go 8-8."
Those are strong words from a player who never successfully ran an NFL offense on or off the field.
Leinart has a reason to hold a grudge against Whisenhunt. He lost his starting job to Warner as the result of Whisenhunt's decision.
Leinart also has a reason to dislike the Titans. The franchise chose Vince Young over him in the 2006 NFL Draft.
Of course, Leinart also has a reason to hold a grudge against Warner -- Warner's the guy who took his starting job. And Leinart refuses to say anything bad about Warner.
"Kurt Warner was fantastic," Leinart insisted.
Maybe the Titans should have hired Warner.
