Titans' Callahan: Brownlee trade won't start fire-sale amid 0-3 start
Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan dismissed the notion that the team is dumping players from the roster after it traded cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. to the New York Jets on Tuesday.
"I know the Brownlee trade is on everybody's mind," Callahan said Wednesday, according to team reporter Jim Wyatt. "Those are conversations that we have, and (Titans general manager) Mike (Borgonzi) and I have all those conversations. We're in lockstep with those decisions that get made. Those are things that are made for the short-term and the long-term interest of the football team, and that's ultimately what it was."
Callahan added, "I'm not going to go into too many details about those conversations."
Brownlee, who started 16 games for the Titans over the last two seasons, was sent to New York along with a 2026 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round selection. Tennessee's decision to deal a young and inexpensive defensive back led to speculation about the club potentially shopping multiple players amid an 0-3 start to the season.
Callahan described the trade as a "one-off situation" as opposed to the start of a flurry of moves. However, he left the door open for other possible moves down the road.
"I can't say whether or not there will be something more or nothing more," Callahan said. "It's hard for me to make any predictions about that or any statements about it."
The Titans' coach highlighted cornerbacks Marcus Harris and Jalyn Armour-Davis as players who will get more opportunities following the trade. Callahan also praised the play of Darrell Baker to begin the season but wouldn't say who will start alongside L'Jarius Sneed at cornerback Sunday against the Houston Texans.
Callahan also said that he'd like to see his team come out with a sense of urgency and energy over the course of the week to showcase "how badly (they) want to find a way to win a game."
The 41-year-old is in his second season at the helm of the Titans, owning a 3-17 record with the team. First overall pick Cam Ward has shown flashes but hasn't led Tennessee to a victory through its first three games.
