Lawrence surprised by Jaguars' struggles: 'We suck right now'
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence didn't hold back while addressing his team's offensive struggles following an 18-13 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.
"We suck right now," Lawrence said postgame. "I'm pretty shocked. We had a great offseason, great training camp, and we have to figure it out. We know we've got a good group, we've got good players. We can be a really good offense, but clearly we're not."
The Jaguars limited the Browns' offense to 4.6 yards per play, but Jacksonville's offensive unit lacked consistency in red-zone situations once again. The team scored only one touchdown in four red-zone trips in Week 2 and dropped to 0-2 in 2024. It's also the second straight week in which Doug Pederson's outfit was held to under 20 points.
Pederson said postgame that Jacksonville has enough individual talent on the roster, according to Demetrius Harvey of the Florida Times-Union. However, running back Travis Etienne doesn't think that's enough.
"We need hard workers, not talented guys," Etienne said Sunday.
Lawrence completed just 14 of 30 pass attempts for 220 yards versus Cleveland. The 2021 No. 1 selection also picked up 45 yards on the ground. He has now completed only 51% of his passes this season and amassed just one touchdown.
"Everybody has to take accountability," Lawrence added. "I gotta play better. I'm the leader of his offense."
The Jaguars gave Lawrence new offensive weapons this past offseason, drafting wide receiver Brian Thomas in the first round and signing wideout Gabe Davis.
Pederson entered the 2024 regular season under pressure after Jacksonville finished 2023 with a 9-8 record. The Jaguars have made the playoffs just once since drafting Lawrence.
