Derek Sherrod's family discusses his injury and recovery
Derek Sherrod's family has shed some light on the tackle's extended absence from the Green Bay Packers.
Sherrod has been sidelined since breaking his leg in December 2011 and both he and the Packers have been silent regarding the complications that stemmed from his first surgery.
In separate interviews, Sherrod's older brother Dezmond and his father Louis spoke about his recovery.
"No one truly understands really what happens behind closed doors, in the locker room, on training tables," said Dezmond Sherrod, via Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "But he is definitely 100% dedicated to getting back on the field.
Sherrod suffered the injury while blocking Kansas City linebacker Tamba Hali. He fractured both the tibula and fibula bones in his right leg when another player fell on top of him.
He returned to light practice for two weeks last year but was placed on the PUP list after showing signs of limping while running.
"When they tried to put him out there, they noticed that he couldn't put the weight on his leg," said Louis Sherrod. "Then they had to do MRIs and scans to find out why his leg was shaking uncontrollably. They discovered that he had an ankle problem.
"They didn't even know that he needed another surgery until this spring. All of last year was wasted. That could have been from complications from the first surgery, but it was something that was left undone."
