Former defensive lineman Shaun Smith admits he smoked marijuana before every game during his nine seasons in the NFL.

Smith, who last played in 2012 as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs, was one of several retired athletes interviewed by Bleacher Report Magazine about their marijuana use. In one video, Smith and others were asked if they ever played while high.

"Yeah, I had a little ritual: Smoke two blunts before every game," Smith said. "When I smoke, I can focus and actually do the job that I have to do and tasks. It's like I'm in the zone. I feel like nobody could stop me when I was out there. Mellowed me out, got me going, and it's the best thing for me."

Smith estimated that "at least 80 percent" of NFL players smoke marijuana, and said coaches and personnel people use it too.

"Everybody has their reason. They use it for their pain," he said. "We're all big guys. Our body hurts."
