Curry on nagging quad injury: 'Not really on my mind,' 'definitely an improvement'
Steph Curry's injured right quadriceps is improving, and the timing couldn't be better for his Golden State Warriors.
"It's not really on my mind when I'm playing," Curry said Wednesday. "That's definitely an improvement from weeks past."
You'd be forgiven if you hadn't realized that Curry has even been playing through an injury.
After all, the Davidson product is averaging 20.8 points and 7.1 assists during a 14-game stretch where he's been limited due to a "minor" right quadriceps strain, shooting 39.1 percent on threes in that span. Really, there hasn't been much drop-off in his numbers at all:
Curry | Pts/36 | Ast/36 | TS% | 3FG% | MPG |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Up to Feb 24 | 23.2 | 8.5 | 60% | 41.9% | 37.5 |
Since Feb 24 | 23.1 | 7.9 | 60.8% | 39.1% | 32.4 |
Still, though, note the not-insignificant drop in minutes over that stretch. While he's ramped up the playing time in three of his past four outings, it appears that coach Mark Jackson is still being careful.
His return to full health is excellent news given Golden State's now-tenuous grasp on a playoff spot. They'll need the very best Curry to avoid falling a game-and-a-half in the standings, where several Western Conference foes lurk looking to push the Warriors out (five teams are within two games of each other for the final four playoff spots).
