Penguins place Jarry on waivers

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced they placed goaltender Tristan Jarry on waivers Wednesday.

Joel Blomqvist will be recalled in a corresponding move, and Jarry will be assigned to the AHL if he clears, president of hockey operations and general manager Kyle Dubas said, per Tribune Sports' Seth Rorabaugh.

Jarry is in the second season of a five-year contract with a $5.375-million cap hit. The signing was one of Dubas' first moves after arriving in Pittsburgh.

The 29-year-old netminder has struggled mightily this season, posting an .886 save percentage in 21 appearances. He's saved minus-8.83 goals above expected, fourth worst among all NHL goalies, according to Evolving-Hockey.

"He's continued to come in here, put the work in and that's not been a question at all," Dubas said. "That just hasn't materialized the way we would like it to on the ice. At this level, you get to the point where you have to do what's right ... for him and for us."

Jarry has been reliable for most of his career, owning a career .910 save percentage. He had previously never completed a full season with a sub-.900 mark, and he finished seventh in Vezina Trophy voting in 2020 and 2022.

Blomqvist, 23, owns a .903 save percentage in eight NHL appearances this season and a .912 mark in 12 AHL games.

Alex Nedeljkovic, who overtook the No. 1 job from Jarry last season, has also struggled in 2024-25 with an .886 save percentage in 19 games.
