Gobert: I'll go to Olympics with 'NBA trophy in my hand' if Jazz win title
Rudy Gobert has his sights set on winning an NBA championship and Olympic gold medal this year.
In an interview with Olympics.com, Gobert said he plans to bring the Larry O'Brien Trophy to the Tokyo 2020 Games this summer if the Utah Jazz win the title.
"Straight after the game, I'll get on the plane with the NBA trophy in my hand," Gobert said, laughing. "No, no, we'll see ... I may miss the Opening Ceremony, but the most important thing is that I'm ready for the team. For now, my focus is on the NBA, and then it will be Olympic gold."
The Jazz center will join fellow NBA players Nicolas Batum, Evan Fournier, Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, and Frank Ntilikina on France's Olympic men's basketball roster. Gobert is confident they'll bring home gold.
"Yes, of course. But our No. 1 goal is to enjoy our time there," Gobert said. "Having said that, we're aiming really high. We know it's going to be tough, but we're all looking forward to this challenge. Obviously, we're going to take one game at a time, we'll want to get better as we progress, but I'm convinced we'll have the opportunity to get great results if we play together and if we focus for the whole competition."
Gobert and the Jazz open the first round of the NBA playoffs Sunday against the winner of Friday's play-in matchup between the Golden State Warriors and Memphis Grizzlies.
