Brewers' Burnes breaks record for most Ks without walk

Corbin Burnes entered the record books on Thursday.

The Milwaukee Brewers right-hander struck out nine against the St. Louis Cardinals to set two MLB records.

First, the right-hander struck out Harrison Bader in the second inning to set the record for the most strikeouts recorded without issuing a walk to begin a season.

Burnes' 52nd strikeout of the 2021 campaign allowed him to pass previous record holder Kenley Jansen of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In the fifth inning, Burnes allowed his first walk of the season to shortstop Tommy Edman, but not before he continued his record-setting ways by striking out his 58th hitter without issuing a free pass.

Burnes' 58 punchouts before issuing a walk is a record for any stretch of games.

"It wasn't a goal to not walk anyone," Burnes said of the streak after the Brewers' loss to St. Louis, according to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. "Obviously, you don't want to put guys on base, and you want to make them earn it. But to go that long without one is pretty special, and now I guess I've got to start over."
