Report: Mets focused on Springer despite Arenado rumors
Although the Colorado Rockies reportedly want the Mets to engage with them regarding a Nolan Arenado trade, New York appears to be interested in another star player.
The Mets are focused on free-agent outfielder George Springer, according to MLB Network's Jon Morosi.
New York's interest in Springer is well-documented, with the organization reportedly "moving closer" last week to deciding between him or free-agent starting pitcher Trevor Bauer.
Mets owner Steve Cohen apparently prefers Springer, who would be a tremendous addition to the team's lineup after seven seasons with the Houston Astros.
New York's general manager, Jared Porter, recently mentioned the organization's interest in Springer.
"We are currently evaluating all pockets of the market. Whether that's free agency, trades, the high end, the low end, for depth. So, Springer is a guy who's going to be part of that process," Porter said on MLB Network Radio on Tuesday.
Springer is the top outfielder available in a crowded free-agent market.
The 31-year-old Connecticut native, who's reportedly giving "serious thought" to playing for the Toronto Blue Jays, is a three-time All-Star and the 2017 World Series MVP.
